Cannabidiol-based products are increasing in popularity, and more people are using the natural substance to treat issues like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disorders like insomnia, pain from issues like fibromyalgia and more.

CBD is a naturally-occuring substance that’s derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. Though it stems from the same source as the recreational marijuana known for creating a “high” or “stoned” feeling, it’s non-psychoactive and non-addictive.

More medical trials are showcasing the effectiveness of CBD – a  recent study found that CBD relieved some symptoms in patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Researchers gave varying doses of CBD to 11 patients who also received routine psychiatric medications and therapy for two months. At the end of the experiment, 10 out of 11 patients reported a decrease in the severity of their PTSD symptoms. Some also said they experienced less frequent nightmares associated with their PTSD.

In another trial, CBD helped relieve symptoms in patients suffering from social anxiety disorder by impacting the levels of serotonin in their brains.

Not sure how to begin a CBD regimen, how to use it or the appropriate doses to take? Here are a few ways to use CBD-based products, and how long it typically takes for users to feel their effects:

Topicals – Topical variations of CBD include formulas like ointments, lotions, creams and balms. Users will experience the effects of topical CBD relatively quickly. Once it’s applied, pain relief should be felt within about 15 minutes.

Ingestibles – This includes gummies, capsules, tinctures, candies, even chocolates. Results can vary from person to person, but when held under the tongue, tincture formulas will absorb within 30 seconds and users can expect to feel relief within 15 minutes. This is the fastest way to absorb CBD into your body. When ingesting CBD in a food, gummy, or chocolate, it may take anywhere from 40 minutes to two hours. What to know before you begin a CBD regimen: CBD is a potent substance that’s been shown to improve a variety of issues, but just like any herb, vitamin or health product, users should be careful when trying it for the first time. Never overdo it – begin consuming or applying just a small amount, and increase it gradually if its effects aren’t felt within the suggested time frame. Remember that results can vary depending on factors like height, weight, tolerance, fitness levels, diet and more.
