The popularity of cannabidiol-based products are popping up across the nation, and states like Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois and Indiana are the latest to offer CBD concoctions to residents.

Cincinnati-based retailer Kroger, the largest supermarket chain by revenue in the U.S., announced earlier this week that it would begin selling items containing CBD in nearly 1,000 stores across 17 states.

Retailers like CVS, GNC, Walgreens and Vitamin Shoppe are already carrying products that contain hemp, a derivative of the Cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol, the substance that gives recreational marijuana smokers the feeling of being “stoned” or high. 

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the selling of commercial consumer products that stem from hemp. This means any part of the plant, such as the leaf or flowering top, can be legally used as long as the THC content remains at 0.3 percent or less.

“Like many retailers, we are starting to offer our customers a highly curated selection of topical products like lotions, balms, oils and creams that are infused with hemp-derived CBD,” Kristal Howard, head of corporate communications and media relations, said in a statement. “CBD is a naturally occurring and non-intoxicating compound that has promising benefits and is permitted within federal and state regulations. Our limited selection of hemp-derived CBD topical products is from suppliers that have been reviewed for quality and safety.”

Because of strict regulations, Kroger stores in certain states – such as Ohio – won’t be selling items that contain CBD. 

Kroger will begin carrying CBD products like oils, creams, lotions and balms, since the Food and Drug Administration still prohibits the sale of supplements, food and drinks that contain cannabidiol. The federal agency currently only allows the sale of products that can be applied topically.

Kroger locations in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming are currently approved to carry cannabidiol-based items. 

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a substance that comes from the Cannabis sativa plant. The naturally-occurring chemical is used in products like topical creams, oils and edibles. Though it comes from the same source as recreational marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive and non-addictive. CBD is just one of many phytocannabinoids derived by the cannabis plant, and it’s been shown to help people suffering with anxiety, inflammation, depression, chronic pain and more.
